The 9th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) was successfully held on 28-29 November 2023 at the Madinat Jumierah Convention Centre in Dubai, following announcements from the Dubai Water and Water Authority (DEWA), the Dubai Supreme Energy Council (DSCE) and the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO). This was followed by the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) at Dubai Expo from 30 November to 12 December.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the World Green Economy Summit has become an ideal platform to bring together experts and experts from various fields of the global green economy to exchange experience and knowledge, and to discuss new ideas and initiatives,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Thier, Vice Chairman of Dubai’s Supreme Energy Council, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA and Chairman of WGEO.

“Our goal is to promote investment in the green economy, develop sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, and encourage innovation to support sustainable development and balance economic growth with environmental sustainability,” he continued. Under wise leadership, the UAE has become a pioneer in climate action and the transition to a green economy, supporting global efforts to combat climate change and achieve sustainable development. ”

“WGES supports the UAE’s efforts to promote a green economy globally, encourages international cooperation and partnerships between the government and the private sector, and attracts investment for sustainable projects. WGES also aims to discuss accelerating the development of green ecosystems and smart cities, as well as exploring the impact of technology on the green economy, supporting innovation in different industries. ”

Thiel stressed that the participation of policymakers, the business community and other actors plays a key role in shaping the global climate agenda and accelerating the implementation of the Paris climate agreement. He noted that WGES supports dialogue and strengthens partnerships to face global challenges and accelerate the transition to a sustainable green economy.

Last year’s 8th WGES hosted more than 20 panel discussions and workshops under the theme “Climate Action Leadership Through Collaboration: A Roadmap to Net Zero”, attracting global luminaries, senior officials, policymakers, thought leaders, and heads of international institutions and organizations. They shared insights and expertise on best practices to drive the transition to a sustainable green economy.
